Rearrange the classroom
This inquiry question was asked of a Year 1 class in the context of a possible re-organisation of the classroom. Pairs of students were given a card with a photo of two objects or places in the classroom and were asked to see if a move was possible. The only stipulation was that they couldn’t move the items. For example: Will the equipment trolley fit where the bookshelf is now? Will this poster fit on the classroom door? A range of materials were available. The students naturally started measuring using objects as non-standard units. Discussion after the measuring elicited some deep understandings about measurement e.g. if you use a large object then you don’t need as many… to compare two objects you can count units and then compare the numbers ..
